The Discrepancy between Hašek's and Lada's Schweik

The BA thesis analyses the relationship of text and illustrations in the novel written by Jaroslav Hašek Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka. First of all, the motifs of the novel are analysed, and then the novel is set in wider context of genre reading (the grotesque, picaresque novel, war novel). The textual analysis serves as the basis for comparison of two different sets of illustrations: that of Josef Lada and that of George Grosz that were created for theater adapation of the novel in theater of Erwin Piscator. Drawing on that, the posibilities of image based reading of a literary text are shown, the different interpretational attitudes of the compared artists are analysed, and the modes of creating image-text relations are discussed. The thesis concludes with comparison of the two sets of images, and their possible influences on the reading of the novel. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
